Reader’s Question:

I am eighteen years old and just got a speeding ticket in Coon Rapids, Minnesota. This is my 1st speeding ticket and I would like to know if my insurance rates will go up for sure? Is there something I can do so that they do not go up?

Coon Rapids, MN

When you are convicted of a speeding ticket in Coon Rapids, Minnesota you will be fined and the offense will go on your Minnesota driving record. If you are charged with recurring or serious violations of the Minnesota law, the Minnesota Department of Public Safety may take away your drivers license or restrict where, when and what type of car you can drive.

Since this was your 1st ticket, your car insurance rates may not change however if you have a safe driver discount it might be removed. Insurance providers vary on their rating system but most consider the seriousness of your offenses and assess rate changes accordingly. To verify what type of rating system your insurance carrier uses, contact your current insurance broker.

You might also consider taking a Driver Improvement Clinic or traffic school to help take the ticket off of your driving record or improve your car insurance rates if they increase. The Minnesota DPS office should be able to assist you on this matter.
