Reader’s Question:

I’m seventeen years old, getting my GED and I want to obtain my driver’s license while I’m seventeen instead of waiting till I’m eighteen. Can I do that?. I live in Flora, IL.

In Illinois you cannot get a full driver’s license until you are eighteen due to the graduated licensing system in place. You can begin the initial licensing phase at age seventeen though. This initial licensing phase has certain restrictions such as:

  • Parental consent to acquire license and a parent must verify that a minimum twenty five hours of behind the wheel practice have taken place.
  • All occupants under the age of eighteen must wear seat belts.
  • Limited to 1 passenger under the age of twenty for the first six months or until the driver reaches age eighteen. Siblings, step-siblings, children and step-children of the motorist are exempt.
  • Legal blood alcohols content (BAC) limit is .00

If you need more information on the Illinois licensing system you can contact your local Driver Services agency in Flora, IL.
