Reader’s Question:

I have a 16 year old teen and she wants to start driving but I can’t afford car insurance so can she drive a car that is under my name and her mother’s name if she gets her license. Does she need to have insurance right when she obtains her license in Wyoming?

Jim

Cheyenne, WY

According to the Wyoming’s mandatory auto liability insurance law, anyone operating a motor vehicle must satisfy the state’s financial responsibility limits of 25/50/20.

In addition to that, under the Wyoming financial responsibility law, liability policy means an owner’s or an operator’s policy of liability insurance, certified as proof of financial responsibility, and issued by an insurance company authorized to do business in this state, to or for the benefit of the individual named as insured.

Plus, when your teen daughter is getting a license, since she is under 18, you as the parents will need to sign a minor’s release form. Part of this form may include being responsible for the minor while he is operating a vehicle or keeping insurance coverage so find out from the WY DOT exactly what the release form states.

Good Student Discount Car Insurance

Reader’s Question:

Why are some insurance companies offer good student discounts on car insurance?

Michelle

Denver, CO

Good student discounts are offered by insurance companies as a way to help alleviate the high cost of car insurance for more responsible teens or young drivers by allowing this type of reduction in their car insurance rates.

According to statistics, students with higher grade point averages (GPA) tend to be more responsible when driving a motor vehicle. A discount is therefore offered to encourage responsibility in those teens or young drivers under the age of 25 who may be eligible.

To get more information if you would be eligible for a good student discount, you may contact your insurance broker and find out if they offer this discount and if so what their requirements are to acquire.

16 Year Old Driver – Can I Buy Car Insurance?

Reader’s Question:

Can I own a car and buy insurance even if I’m only 16 with just a learners permit? I live in Wisconsin.

Yen

Good question Yen.

There are no age restrictions for buying and registering motor vehicles according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.

According to Section 218.0147 of the Wisconsin state statutes that no minor may purchase or lease any motor vehicle unless the minor at the time of the purchase or lease submits to the seller or lessor a statement verified before a person authorized to administer oaths and made and signed by either a parent or a guardian.

This means that you will need a parent or guardian to sign a statement giving you a consent to buy a vehicle. The signed statement will also be use for the application for title.

So basically you may be able to purchase a vehicle if you have the right paperwork and consent from your parent or guardian. This may also apply in getting car insurance, but some insurance companies may not allow you because a minor is not bound to any contracts. You will probably going to have your parent sign any insurance documents if you are going to apply for a car insurance.

If you want to get more information in laws in the state of Wisconsin regarding a minor purchasing and insuring a vehicle, you may contact with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and with the Commissioner of Insurance.

Goodluck!
