Reader’s Question:

When I was 16 and before I even got my driver’s license, I got a ticket for reckless driving, another ticket for not stopping after getting involved in an accident, and another ticket for speeding. It has been five years already. I want to find out if these tickets will affect my car insurance?

Marian

Stamford, CT

For the most part, these kind of situation will not affect your quest to buy car insurance. Most of the insurance providers only research the last 3 years on your motor vehicle record. There are some insurance providers that will research the last five years on your motor vehicle record. There is an extremely small minority of insurance carriers that will research the last 7 years of your motor vehicle history. Again, that is an extremely small number of companies. You may contact your car insurance company to verify how long they check back for motor vehicle driving record

18 Year Old Teen Driver – How Long am I Covered on Parents Auto Insurance?

Reader’s Question:

Hi Im 18years old. I just want to know how long should a new driver covered under their parents insurance policy after they get their license?

Gene

Thank you for asking Gene.

A new driver actually may not be automatically covered under their parent’s policy once they get their license.

A new driver may first have to be listed on their parents policy declaration’s page. Your parent need to contact their insurance agency first and you will have to be added or endorsed to their policy. Once you have obtained your driver’s license you should be added to the policy although some policies cover those driver’s with restricted license.

If you are listed on your parent’s or guardian’s policy, you should be covered on that policy until you are removed from the policy. I would suggest that you contact your parent’s insurance company to verify if you are include in their policy and what procedures you need to do to remove yourself from the policy. It is likely that you should stay on the policy if you live in the household.

Goodluck!

Reader’s Question:

Im a teen driver and I got a ticket for speeding, what will happen next? I live in Ohio.

Athena

Thank you for asking Athena.

A ticket for exceeding the speed limit by more than 5 mph, when the limit is 55mph will typically result in receiving two points on Your Ohio driver’s record. If you received a written warning with no fines, this might be placed on your driving record.

A fine or court appearance for a written warning are not required in some states. It just sometimes serves as a warning. While other states placed this on your record and file this as a warning. You may verify this information with the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles to find out what Ohio state does with written warnings.

A a probationary driver license holder under the age of 17 years, convicted with traffic violations during the first six months of having driver’s license, he must be accompanied by a licensed adult or a guardian whenever operating a vehicle during the six month period commencing on the date on which the person is convicted of or pleads guilty to the violation until that person attains the age of 17.

Your insurance company will see the violation if the speeding offense was recorded by the state patrol, when they next check your MVR, which is usually done if you make any changes on your policy.

Reader’s Question:

Im 16 years old and I want to know if I can drive in New York with my Florida drivers license.

Midge

Thank you for asking Midge.

New York state restricts driving privileges if you are under the age of 18 and have an out of state license or if you are of any age and have an out of state learners permits. This is according to the New York state Department of Motor Vehicles.

You must obey all restrictions both on home state and of NYS restrictions on learners permit or junior licenses in NY. You may check the NYS Department of motor vehicle website regarding learners and junior licenses restrictions.

It is not permitted for a teenager under the age of 16 to drive in the state of NEW York. You are not exempted from the rule if you have a learners permit or driver’s license from another state.

You may be able to check also with the Florida HSMV to verify if your permit is valid outside your state. You cannot drive it if it is only valid on the issuing state.

You may also verify with the Florida HSMV if graduated license are allowed to drive out of state as long as you abide by the restrictions Florida will place on you.

Teen Driver Non Owner Auto Insurance Policy?

Reader’s Question:

Should I get my daughter a non owners policy since she does not own a vehicle? She just got her driver’s license.

Linda

Good Question, Linda.

Generally, it is actually much cheaper if you add her to your insurance policy rather than getting a separate insurance for her. You may be able to get a discount from your insurance company for multi-policy if she will be driving her own car.

As soon as your teenager begins to operate a vehicle, you will need to notify your insurance company that you will add her as an additional driver in the household. Since teenagers are inexperienced in driving, you will notice a higher premium on your insurance, since according to statistics, they tend to get involve in an accident.

You may expect your insurance rate to go up as much as 50% if you add a teenager in you policy. A son however will increase a premiums for as much as 100%. You may consider increasing your liability limits for additional protection.

Please note that some non owners policies do not cover vehicles that are owned by a member of the same household.

Goodluck!
