Reader’s Question:

I’m a new driver (I’m only 17 y/o) and they told me that my car insurance here in Minnesota is going to be expensive. Why is it so and how can I make it lower?

There are a number of reasons why teen car insurance is more expensive than car insurance free teen car insurance for other age bracket. The first on the list is that these young drivers don’t have much experience in driving yet, which makes them higher risk to car insurance companies. One other reason is the age itself as car insurance premiums for teens are expected to be rather high. Typically, car insurance premiums are higher for young male drivers than the females, since men are perceived as higher risk to car insurance companies.

When teens start driving, they experience freedom that they always wanted and it’s also the start of their responsibility. Most parents encourage their teens to be confident while driving to avoid any anxiety and prevent any traffic mishaps. Any kind of traffic mishaps can result in having a ridiculous increase on their car insurance. As a young driver, if you are going to have your own car, make sure that you choose a less expensive car since it is more likely to have lower car insurance premiums.

Most importantly, you have to know that you need to keep a good driving record so as not to pay expensive car insurance premiums. Being a safe driver not only keep you away from trouble but also manage to keep your car insurance premiums in Minnesota low.

Reader’s Question:

HI Im 17 years old and a Florida resident. I have a full class E driver’s license. I want to know if I can drive in New York City.

Reyanne

Thank you for asking.

According to the New York Division of State, those non residents with a valid driver’s license by their home state and is over 18 years of age may drive in New York city but is subject to restrictions in their license.

Those who are under 16 years of age are not permitted to drive in New York city no matter what type of license they hold.

If you are 16-17 years of age, you may be able to drive in the New York state and must obey New York State Operator restriction.

1. No driving is permitted within the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Richmond. You may drive in all other areas of New York State, except the five boroughs of New York City with these conditions:

* Between 5 a.m. and 9 p.m. without being accompanied, except Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
* Between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. without being accompanied when traveling to and from school or work.
* Between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. when accompanied by a parent or guardian.

So even though you have a full license you are still subject to obey the NYS junior licensing restrictions that include not being able to drive in the new York city. This restrictions applies to all driver’s under 18 years old and who are licensed outside the new York state.

If you want to get more information regarding driving out of state with a full drivers license under the age of 17, you may call the NYS Department of Motor Vehicle.

Goodluck!
