Hi Im 18years old. I just want to know how long should a new driver covered under their parents insurance policy after they get their license?

Gene

Thank you for asking Gene.

A new driver actually may not be automatically covered under their parent’s policy once they get their license.

A new driver may first have to be listed on their parents policy declaration’s page. Your parent need to contact their insurance agency first and you will have to be added or endorsed to their policy. Once you have obtained your driver’s license you should be added to the policy although some policies cover those driver’s with restricted license.

If you are listed on your parent’s or guardian’s policy, you should be covered on that policy until you are removed from the policy. I would suggest that you contact your parent’s insurance company to verify if you are include in their policy and what procedures you need to do to remove yourself from the policy. It is likely that you should stay on the policy if you live in the household.

Reader’s Question:

Will my 17-year old boy be covered in case of accident if I have a full policy coverage on my car insurance?

Yolanda

Thank you for asking.

If you have the liability and physical damage liability, you son may be covered. I would suggest that you speak with your insurance company and make sure you review the terms and exclusions on your policy as well as the details about having a teenager included in the coverage.

If a seventeen year old boy is included in the household for instance, it is your responsibility to inform your insurance company that the teenager is licensed and must be added to the policy as a driver so that proper coverage will be on that person.

If on the other hand the teen is not a member of the household, you will need to speak to your insurance agent to make sure that he will be covered. You may also read through the terms on your policy because some policies may have exclusions for drivers under certain age . Other exclusions also limits the coverage on those that borrows your vehicle.

If you found out that your son is not covered and will be needing to get car insurance, you may speak with your current insurance agent to find out how you can extend the policy to your son.

Reader’s Question:

Why are teenager’s car insurance rates high?

Therese

Good Question Therese.

Insurance rates are usually based on statistics. According to statistics, teens more likely get involved in an accident. Teenagers have a very high rates of fatal and nonfatal crashes compared to adult drivers. Whether the rates are based on total number of teenagers or miles driven, teens have more crashes in cars. When the crash involvement is based on the number of licensed drivers instead of the total population, the fatality rate of the teenagers are more extreme compared to drivers age 20 or older.

Here are some tips that may be able to help you lower insurance rate for teens.

1. If you stay on your parents policy, you could save money. This would increase your parents premiums, but it is much cheaper compared from you starting anew policy. Discounts may be available if you have driving experience.

2. Discounts from some insurance companies like getting good grades or taking driving class may be available for you. But this does not mean that you will get lower insurance premiums than an adult with more driving experience already.

3. Your rates will drop as you get older. You will notice a drop as much as 28% at the age of 19. An additional 31% may drop at the age of 21 in your insurance premiums.

Lastly, try to maintain a good credit history and a clean driving record so you can be eligible for more discounts in the future.

Reader’s Question:

Im 16 years old and I want to know if I can drive in New York with my Florida drivers license.

Midge

Thank you for asking Midge.

New York state restricts driving privileges if you are under the age of 18 and have an out of state license or if you are of any age and have an out of state learners permits. This is according to the New York state Department of Motor Vehicles.

You must obey all restrictions both on home state and of NYS restrictions on learners permit or junior licenses in NY. You may check the NYS Department of motor vehicle website regarding learners and junior licenses restrictions.

It is not permitted for a teenager under the age of 16 to drive in the state of NEW York. You are not exempted from the rule if you have a learners permit or driver’s license from another state.

You may be able to check also with the Florida HSMV to verify if your permit is valid outside your state. You cannot drive it if it is only valid on the issuing state.

You may also verify with the Florida HSMV if graduated license are allowed to drive out of state as long as you abide by the restrictions Florida will place on you.

Reader’s Question:

HI Im 17 years old and a Florida resident. I have a full class E driver’s license. I want to know if I can drive in New York City.

Reyanne

Thank you for asking.

According to the New York Division of State, those non residents with a valid driver’s license by their home state and is over 18 years of age may drive in New York city but is subject to restrictions in their license.

Those who are under 16 years of age are not permitted to drive in New York city no matter what type of license they hold.

If you are 16-17 years of age, you may be able to drive in the New York state and must obey New York State Operator restriction.

1. No driving is permitted within the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens and Richmond. You may drive in all other areas of New York State, except the five boroughs of New York City with these conditions:

* Between 5 a.m. and 9 p.m. without being accompanied, except Nassau and Suffolk Counties.
* Between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. without being accompanied when traveling to and from school or work.
* Between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. when accompanied by a parent or guardian.

So even though you have a full license you are still subject to obey the NYS junior licensing restrictions that include not being able to drive in the new York city. This restrictions applies to all driver’s under 18 years old and who are licensed outside the new York state.

If you want to get more information regarding driving out of state with a full drivers license under the age of 17, you may call the NYS Department of Motor Vehicle.

Why do I have a video about Goldilocks on a post for safe cars for a teen driver? Well, Goldilocks in general because I think the theme behind buying a safe car for a teen driver is to buy the car that is, as Goldilocks would say, juuuuust riiiight. This video in particular because I love Roald Dahl, and it takes me back to when I was six years old and reading his revolting rhymes.

I wouldn’t show it to your teen driver, though. They might think you’re crazy.

Your teen driver is more at risk than any other kind of driver for fatal car crashes, or even just a car crash involving an injury. While six thousand teens die every year in car accidents, over three hundred thousand are seriously injured. This is among the main reasons for why teen driver car insurance rates are so high. In order to lower your teen driver car insurance rates, you have to comply with the car insurance company by lowering the risk of your teen driver. And how do you lower the risk? There are a lot of ways, but a good place to start is by buying your teen driver the right car, which is what many parents do before their kid starts driving on their own.

When picking a car for your teen driver, you should…

Be a parent, not a friend.

Your teen driver wants the convertible or the sports car. Don’t give in, even if you have the money for the higher premium an the car note. It’s been documented that high performance vehicles are more likely to be involved in car accidents, and having a teen driver in a car that goes very fast is a recipe for disaster. You don’t have to buy your teen driver a station wagon, but practice your firm use of the word “NO” before you go with them to the car dealer ship.

Pick a stable car.

While SUVs are generally larger and seem to be safer, they aren’t a good option for your teen driver, either. Not even the smaller ones that seem like a good compromise. The reason for this is that they have a low center of gravity, which means they are more likely to skid and roll over, even with safety devices that protect against this. The bumpers are usually not made of the strongest material, and crumple quickly while causing significant damage to the other car.

Look for crash worthiness.

That doesn’t even sound like a word, but it’s one that gets thrown around a lot in the car insurance business. A crash worthy car is one hat has passed crash tests in flying colors.

Remember that size is important.

You shouldn’t let your teen driver have a large vehicle, because if they drive recklessly then they could cause a lot of damage. Neither should you allow them to drive a smaller car, because those receive a lot of damage. The best way to go is just riight. Get a mid sized car that is crash worthy.

Not buy ancient.

Older cars are cheap, and most of us drove a piece of junk when we were young, but if you have the option not to, you should avoiding buying a car that is over ten years old for your teen driver. In fact, again you should get the car whose age is juuust riiight. A new car will have higher teen driver car insurance rates, and an older car won’t have the popular safety features. Buy a car that’s a few years old, but not too old, and you’ll have a match.
