Reader’s Question:

If a 19 year old driver with a good driving record receives a speeding ticket and the law enforcement officer did not take any insurance information will the car insurance rates rise for the driver? I live in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Bridgeport, CT

Yes, it is possible for this speeding ticket to increase the driver’s car insurance rates. The police officer that stops a driver, and writes up the citation for traffic violations such as speeding, is not directly reporting the violation to your insurance provider. When a law enforcement officer requests insurance information it is to be sure the car or the driver that is properly insured.

Insurance providers typically finds out about their policyholder’s traffic violation once you pay the fine and plead guilty .After this is done in many states the violation is then put on your driving record by the courts forwarding the information to the DMV. Your insurance carrier then in Bridgeport, Connecticut finds out when they next pull your MVR from the DMV.
