Auto Insurance Coverage and Discounts for Teenagers Arkansas AR
Reader’s Question:
My teenage son is under my auto insurance policy because he doesn’t have his own car. Listing him under my policy made my premiums double. What is the best way to insure him here in Arkansas but still save on my auto insurance rates?

Removing your son’s name from your policy will dramatically lower your car insurance premiums. In order to keep him insured you will need to buy him his own policy. But since he does not own a car, then this would be impossible to do unless his name is included on the title on one of your cars.
Another obstacle that may arise is if your son is below eighteen years of age. If he is a minor, then he may not be permitted to have an auto insurance policy of his own. Also, if you buy a separate policy for your son, it will definitely cost more than what you are paying now.
Since you want to make sure that he is adequately insured but is looking at lowering your current rates, why not maximize the discounts for which he is eligible for? Let your son take a defensive driving course in Arkansas. Most insurers give discounts to teenage drivers who have successfully completed the course. Having good grades in school can also be a factor to qualify for discounts. And since you live in a city in Arkansas where the vehicle density is not that high compared to others, you may qualify for a discount, too.
Call your local agent. Most auto insurance companies do not advertise their promos. Do not hesitate to inquire about discounts since you are entitled to receive these if you are qualified.
